- A Rocky Flora business card
- A small pot
- Good draining potting soil
- Sunny windowsill or space
- Water
Pour high-quality potting soil into your pot, filling it up to about 2/3 capacity. Gently tamp down the soil, adding more if needed. Aim for a pot that is firmly filled but not overly compacted. The paper can be planted either indoors or outdoors, based on the temperature and conditions at the time of planting. We advise against outdoor planting during extreme weather conditions such as blizzards or intense desert heat.
Place your Rocky Flora business card(s) onto the soil. If planting multiple business cards, it's okay for them to overlap. Cover the card(s) with a 1/8-inch layer of soil and gently tamp down on the top.
Following the placement of the card in your pot, thoroughly water it. Aim for the paper and soil to be adequately damp but not overly saturated. During the first 10 days, keep the card moist at all times as this is crucial for the germination process.
Once sprouts appear, continue to keep the card(s) moist but be careful not to overwater. Once robust plants appear, water as needed.
Colorado's state flower, the Rocky Mountain columbine, is a stunning and resilient native perennial featuring blue and white flowers. While growing columbine flowers from seeds is not challenging, it's important to note that they typically don't bloom until the second year. To ensure successful germination, the seeds require a three-week cold spell, which can be achieved by refrigerating the card before planting. Expect the seeds to germinate within approximately 30 days. Once the seedlings have grown a pair of true leaves and reached a height of 3 to 4 inches, transplant them outdoors. The Rocky Mountain columbine is known for readily self-sowing.
